Assistant Manager Information Technology: System Administration
Position Function Statement:
The Assistant Manager of Information Technology-System Administrator is a professional who is primarily responsible for all aspects of systems administration within the Office of Housing and residence Life (OHRL). This includes, but is not limited to; servers, applications, and databases. This position is also responsible for the implementation, configuration, coordination, control, maintenance, trouble-shooting, security, usage monitoring and the development of specialized system procedures. This position will help ensure that the department is current with applicable developing technology and compliant with George Mason University’s computing requirements. This position is also responsible for serving as a back up for the Assistant Manager Information Technology: Web Development.
Supervisor: Assistant Director for Housing Services
Minimum Qualifications:
1) Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, or related discipline or an approved equivalency.
2) Three years post degree, full time experience.
3) Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated success with customer service and satisfaction.
4) Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
5) Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
6) Proven ability to manage time effectively.
7) Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
8) Ability to work collaboratively in a team oriented environment.
Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of SQL, along with general knowledge of access control systems as well as Crystal Reports. Experience in a University housing office.
RESPONSIBILITIES : The Assistant Manager of Information Technology-System Administrator at George Mason University fulfills four primary areas within the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Responsibilities fall into the categories of System Administration, System Security, Application Administration, and Desktop Support/Special Projects.
System Administration (25% of time)
The Assistant Manager of Information Technology is expected to:
a. Monitor system resources to maintain operating efficiency.
b. Create and maintain scripts to enhance performance and automate system administration.
c. Monitor and manage the Active Directory environment.
d. Complete yearly hardware audits of systems.
e. Serve as the fixed asset equipment coordinator for the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
System Security (20% of time)
The Assistant Manager of Information Technology is expected to:
a. Complete quarterly audits of systems security.
b. Perform systems security administration.
c. Maintain application security, event logs and compliance enforcement.
d. Provide monitoring and primary response and intervention for information technology related security incidents and violations.
Application Administration (35% of time)
The Assistant Manager of Information Technology is expected to:
a. General application administration for access control system (B.A.S.I.S.).
b. Establish protocols for access to and use of the access control system (B.A.S.I.S) for all students/staff.
c. Develop an instruction manual for access control system (B.A.S.I.S.) for staff.
d. General application administration for housing management system (Residential Management System-RMS).
e. Serve as the liaison with the Residential Management System home office. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining communication regarding updates to system, creating time-lines for system upgrades, and trouble-shooting GMU specific issues.
f. Develop an instruction manual for use of the Residential Management System for all levels of staff.
g. Develop reports in the Residential Management System..
h. Assist in ensuring that the RMS system interacts accurately and within guidelines of the BANNER system.
i. Improve the functionality of the Residential Management System to better serve the needs of students, parents, and staff.
j. General application administration for Qquest, Judicial Action, and Conference Programmer.
k. Establish protocols for access to and use of Qquest, Judicial Action, and Conference Programmer for all staff.
l. Develop an instruction manual for Qquest, Judicial Action, and Conference Programmer for staff.
Desktop Support/Special Projects (20% of time)
The Assistant Manager of Information Technology is expected to:
a. Provide desktop support to staff, including, but not limited to application maintenance and computer imaging.
b. Develop protocols for staff desktop support requests and log support requests.
c. Provide desktop support for computer labs and multi-media rooms located within the residence halls.
d. Assist in the development and implementation of a Technical Service Assistant program.
e. Supervise the Technical Service Assistants. This includes, but is not limited to, recommendations for hiring, termination, training, work allocation, and problem solving.
f. Assist in the development of training programs for all level of staff regarding proper use of technology utilized within the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
g. Adhere to Commonwealth and University guidelines regarding making purchases and financial transactions.
h. Serve in an on-call rotation for after hour/weekend technology emergencies and work with appropriate staff to resolve issues.
i. Some weekend duties required.
j. Other duties as assigned by the director, associate directors or other OHRL staff.
