How to Apply to a Living Learning Community

It is easy to apply to join a Living Learning Community! While you are completing the housing application, there will be an option that asks if you are interested in joining a LLC. Select "Yes" and follow the prompts to complete the required LLC essays and then complete the housing application. The 2019-2020 LLC Application opens on December 15 for incoming freshmen and January 28 for current residents.

Are You a Incoming Freshman Student?

Freshman students applying to an LLC can access the Freshman Housing Application via StarRez. The deadline to apply for housing and apply to a LLC is May 1, 2019.

Are You an Upper-Level Student?

Upper-level students applying to an LLC can access the Upperclass Housing Selection Housing Application via StarRez. The deadline to apply for housing and apply to a LLC is February 5, 2019.

LLC Application Questions: 

In the LLC application, you will be asked to complete two short-answer questions for the LLC of your choice. The short-answers cannot exceed 2000 characters. The 2019-2020 questions are below:

Freshman LLC Application Questions

Arts: 

  • Please outline what you hope to gain from your experience as a member of the Arts LLC at Mason and why you want to participate in it.
  • Describe how you plan to contribute to a dynamic and engaged Arts LLC community.

Business:

  • Describe what excites you for business and how your interest in business developed.
  • Describe what you hope to gain from your experience as a member of the Business LLC at Mason and how you plan to contribute to your LLC community (both in and out of the classroom).

Global Patriots:

  • What are your strengths and how will they help you develop a global mindset?
  • Who is a global leader you admire and why?
  • What do you hope to gain by participating in the Global Patriots LLC?

LGBTQ+

  • Why is it important to you to live in a community that centers the experiences of LGBTQ+ people?
  • In what ways will you positively contribute to your floor community?What is one goal you have for your first year in college?

OGUN Black Male Success:

  • Describe your community and how Black maleness shows up in your community. Then tell how the Ogun Black male living-learning community can be of benefit to the growth and development of your community?
  • How do you think your participation in the Ogun LLC can assist you in addressing challenge Black males face?
  • What does life look like at Mason for black male students?

Pre-Nursing:

  • Describe what excites you about entering a health care profession.
  • How will you contribute to a dynamic and engaged Pre-Nursing Living Learning Community?
  • Describe what you would gain from your experience as a member of the Pre Nursing LLC at Mason.

Volgenau School of Engineering:

  • Describe what excites you about your intended major and explain how being a member of the Volgenau School of Engineering Living Learning Community will help you achieve your goals.
  • Describe how you would contribute to a dynamic and engaged Volgenau School of Engineering Living Learning Community.
  • Describe your experiences participating in outside of classroom activities.
Mixed - Upper-Level and Freshman LLC Application Questions

Environment & Sustainability:

  • What has your involvement been with environmentally related service and/or educational opportunities?
  • How does the Environment and Sustainability LLC relate to your academic interests and/or your future aspirations?

Leadership through Community Engagement: 

  • What do you hope to gain from your participation in the Leadership through Community Engagement LLC? How do you plan to/how have you contribute(d) to the LLC?
  • What do you see as your responsibility to the community around us? How can you be a leader through social change?
  • What social issue are you most passionate about and why? What can you do to affect social change around this particular issue?

Outdoor Adventure:

  • What do you hope to gain out of being in the Outdoor Adventure LLC?
  • What will you contribute to the Outdoor Adventure LLC community?

The First

Upper-Level Students

  • Describe your experience as a first generation college student in Mason. In what ways have you been engaged in your first gen identity and the first gen community in Mason?
  • How will the opportunities in the First LLC (UNIV 150 class, faculty mixers, study halls, community service, floor events, etc.) help you succeed in college-- academically, socially, and as an individual in Mason?
  • As an upper level student living in a mixed-level LLC, describe what your role will be in relation to the first year students in the First LLC community.

First-Yest Students

  • How did you first hear about the term "first generation college student"? What do you feel in relation to this term?
  • Why are you interested in being a part of an LLC specifically catered for first gen students?
  • How will the opportunities in the First LLC (UNIV 150 class, faculty mixers, study halls, community service, floor events, etc.) help you succeed in college-- academically, socially, and as an individual in Mason?

Well-Being:

  • Define what self-care means to you. Describe some activities or practices you engage in that promote self-care.
  • Living in community has significant benefits for individuals; describe how living in the Well-Being community can facilitate your own self-care.
  • A benefit of being the Well-Being community is developing social networks among other students with common interests and goals. How would the Well-Being community benefit from your participation and input?
Upper-Level LLC Application Questions

Honors:

  • How might residing in community with others help you address one of your academic or social concerns?
  • Please describe a disappointing or upsetting experience during which self-care was difficult to practice. Was there a person or community who were particularly helpful to you during that time?
  • What kind of leadership role interests you most in this community and why? Please pick one: mentorship or community programming.

LGBTQ+

  • Why is it important to you to live in a community that centers the experiences of LGBTQ+ people?
  • At this point in your academic career, what do you hope to gain from the opportunity to live in a community that centers the experiences of LGBTQ+ people?
  • In what ways will you positively contribute to your floor community?
  • What is one goal you have for the 2019-2020 academic year?

Volgenau School of Engineering:

  • Describe what excites and motivates you to continue in your major and explain how being a member of the Volgenau School of Engineering Living Learning Community will help you achieve your goals.
  • How have you been engaged with the community, off-campus or on-campus (including LLC membership), as related to your field of study?
  • What activities do you participate in to overcome stress in life and school? How will living in the VSE LLC help you manage stress?

Gender & Social Justice

  • Why does gender matter in the pursuit of social justice?
  • Describe your previous experiences with gender and social justice. This could be a job, class, passion etc. How could you use these experiences to contribute to creating community and the pursuit of common goals in the Gender and Social Justice LLC?
  • Why do you feel living in a community that shares a passion for advocacy and activism around gender is important? What do you hope to gain from this experience?

Business & Entrepreneurship

  • Describe what excites you about the Business and Entrepreneurship fields and how your interests were developed. Please include any experiences at Mason, internships, or other involvement that can help to illustrate your story.
  • Describe what you hope to gain from your experience as a member of the Business and Entrepreneurship LLC, and how you plan to contribute to your LLC community (both in and out of the classroom).
