Spring 2022

Your safety is our priority

Over 5,000 students will be returning to campus for the spring semester. In order to help keep our students safe, residential students should check their e-mail throughout the semester for updates regarding the masking policy, testing guidelines, and other policy changes.

Spring Break Information

All residence halls will remain open throughout Spring Break. Students who remain on campus throughout the break will need to continue their participation in surveillance testing. Information about dining hours and other things to know during A copy of the information sent to students regarding Spring Break operations can be found here.

End of Semester Move-Out

All Fairfax residents who are not graduating or staying with us for the summer will need to completely check out of their space within 24 hours of their last final, or by Noon on Thursday, May 19, 2022, whichever is the earliest of the two days.

Residents will be able to check out using the Express Check-Out form found in the Housing Portal. A successful check-out includes removing all person items, taking out the trash, returning furniture to its original configuration, and returning your key if you were issued one at check-in. More information regarding check-out will be sent to students when we get closer to the end of the semester.

Extend Stay Information

Residents who are graduating will have the option of delaying their check-out until 6:00pm on the day of their graduation ceremony. Residents who have a graduation ceremony that begins at 6:00pm will have until 9:00am the next day to complete their check out. In order to be approved for extended stay, you must have filed for graduation and complete the Extended Stay form, which will be available beginning on April 13 in the Housing Portal.

Residents who have a summer assignment are also eligible for extended stay. The cost for extended stay is $55/night and will be added to your summer bill. Information regarding extended stay will be sent via Mason e-mail at the beginning of April.

Due to the short time period between the end of the semester and the beginning of the summer term, we are not able to offer extended stay to students who are not graduating or have a summer assignment.

In the Event of Inclement Weather...

The university has been monitoring the anticipated inclement weather for this weekend. At this time, we have not made any changes to our check-in process and plans. Should there be any changes to the check-in process students will be notified via their Mason e-mail.

We thank you for your flexibility and patience with this process and we look forward to welcoming you to campus this weekend.

E-Mail Sent to All Residential Students Regarding Their Spring Return to Campus

Welcome back, Residential Mason Patriot,

Please read this message carefully for residential student guidelines regarding your safe return to the residence halls. Please note that instructions for arriving have significantly changed since our last communication with you.

The Spring 2022 semester will start on January 24 and in just a few weeks you will begin to move back into your residence hall. Your diligence in following COVID prevention guidelines including mask wearing, social distancing, complying with COVID testing, and isolation and quarantine procedures during the Fall helped reinforce our decision to start the semester on time. We look forward to welcoming you back to campus!

What Do I Need to do Before I Arrive to Campus?

  • Students who did not stay in Winter Break Housing between December 18-January 21 can anticipate receiving a link to order their saliva-based Vault COVID test around January 13, 2022.
  • In order to ensure the most accurate results, you must test and return your results exactly 3 days before moving in, but no later than January 19. Students should not plan to check in until their Vault test results have been received.
  • If your Vault test is positive, isolate, and do not come to campus until cleared by your healthcare provider.
  • Get your COVID vaccine booster.
  • If you are a new student to Mason and/or have not uploaded your vaccination or booster documentation, please be sure to do so via the Patient Portal. The deadline for booster documentation is February 15, 2022.

Did You Test Positive for COVID over the Winter Break?

  • Students who have tested positive for COVID over the winter break should note this on the Mason COVID HealthCheck and upload their positive test results into the Patient Portal.
  • If you tested positive over break, as long as (1) your health care provider has cleared you from isolation and (2) you have notified the university of your positive result via Mason COVID Health Check, you do not need to submit a Vault Test or participate in mandatory testing for 90 days from your positive test date.

Spring 2022 Quarantine and Isolation Information

  • COVID-19 quarantine and isolation housing will continue to be provided in the Angel Cabrera Global Center (ACGC) for the Spring 2022 semester.  Due to the omicron variant, use of quarantine and isolation housing will be in high demand. To best manage occupancy in ACGC, students could have a roommate while in isolation.  Student Health Services and Housing and Residence Life will make appropriate roommate determinations.

Spring 2022 FAQs

I'm an international student. What do I need to do to check-in for the spring?

International students who did not stay on campus throughout the winter break will not need to complete a Vault PCR test. Instead, we will accept the PCR test you take for your flight in lieu of the Vault test. You will need to show a copy of your test results (only negative results allowed) at check-in, and need to complete a COVID test last part of the check-in process.

Please note that you will not be able to go to your assigned space until you have checked in. Also, we do not have luggage storage at the Johnson Center, so you will need to have a friend or family member watch your luggage or be prepared to carry it with you throughout the check-in process.

I'm an out of state student or international student who will be arriving after check-in has closed. What do I need to do?

If you are arriving after check-in has closed (after 5:00 pm on January 21 or after 7:00 pm on January 22 or January 23), then you will need to go to either the Piedmont or Eisenhower Desk. You will be allowed to check in provided you can show your negative Vault or PCR test, however, you will need to participate in testing the next day when the testing center opens.

Students who check-in more than three days after completing their pre-flight PCR test will need to complete another PCR test prior to checking in for the spring semester.

When will I receive my Vault test link?

Students will receive the link to order their Vault test around January 13, 2022. Students will need to complete and mail their Vault test back exactly three days prior to moving in on campus, but no later than January 19.

What happens if I don't complete a Vault or PCR test?

Domestic students who do not complete their Vault test will not be able to complete the check-in process. International students who do not have their PCR test results will also not be eligible for check-in.

Can I choose the address for my Vault kit?

Yes. Students will need to enter their address information when ordering their Vault kit. Students should enter the address they will be at when receiving their kit.

How long does it take to get my Vault kit?

Vault usually ships approximately one business day after you have requested your kit. Returning your kit to Vault typically takes approximately one day to reach the lab and two additional days for your sample to be tested.
