New Students

Apply to live on Campus!

Freshmen students are required to live on campus in our residential halls, which feature single, double, triple, and quad rooms, as well as suite-style options. Whether you start in the summer, fall, or spring, you'll need to live in a residence hall for each semester of your first year. Transfer students have the option of living on campus or off-campus.  Select one of the options in the left sub-navigation menu under New Students for more information.

The housing application for the 2023-2024 Academic Year application will be available in the Housing Portal in December.

Housing Application Process

  1. Pay the $250 Enrollment Fee to accept your offer with Admissions. 

  2. Pay your $300 Housing Deposit by May 1st through the Admissions Portal. 

  3. Students who wish to apply for an exemption should do so prior to paying their housing deposit. 

  4. Visit the Learning Communities (LC) page to review the available communities. 

  5. Apply for Housing or Exemption on the Housing Portal. During this process, you will rank your Learning Community preferences. There are no guarantees that you will get your preference – apply early! 

  6. Register for a summer orientation session to be eligible to receive an assignment. (Summer orientation is only for incoming students) 

  7. Roommate grouping will take place during the summer. Please check your Mason email in May for the next steps of the Housing Process. 

Steps to prepare to live on campus

When will I need to complete my housing application?

Pay the $300 housing deposit through the Admissions portal and submit your application on the housing portal by the May 1st priority deadline. 

When will I get my Learning Community Placement?

Check your Mason email in late May to see which Learning Community you have been placed in.

When will I be able to select my roommate(s)?

Group with other students in your assigned learning community in the housing portal in June. Instructions will be sent to your Mason email in late May.

When will I get my housing assignment?

Check your Mason email in July to get your housing assignment and roommate information. You will also be able to select your meal plan at this time 

When can transfer students apply?

The housing application for transfer students will open on April 2023.

Housing Exemption Process

  1. New, incoming fall semester freshmen students who believe they qualify for an exemption and want/need to live off campus can submit an exemption request online via the housing portal StarRez. Log in with your Mason NetID and password.  

  1. Exemptions will be accepted for students who will be above the age of 20 by the start of Fall or who have close residency to campus with a parent or legal guardian. The residence must be within the counties of Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Prince William, or Loudoun.  

  1. If your exemption is for one of the following reasons, you will need to upload the appropriate documentation when you are completing the exemption request form: 

  • Married: Copy of marriage certificate 

  • Dependent family: Copy of child's birth certificate or page one of your most recent tax return (Federal or State), showing the child or parents as a dependent. Financial information and the first 5 digits of Social Security numbers can be redacted 

  • Veteran Status: Copy of DD Form 214, or its equivalent
